How to Tag a XenDirect Course/Section as Canvas LMS

If your organization already has an active Canvas LMS integration, follow these steps to tag new and existing XenDirect courses and sections as a Canvas LMS course offering.

  • Go to Main Menu »» Courses and search for the course desired or add a new course.
  • Edit the course.
  • Select [Canvas] as the Vendor.
  • Save the course record.
  • Go to Main Menu »» Courses »» Sections and search for the course section desired or add a new course section.
  • Go to View mode of the course section.
  • In the blue toolbar, there is a [Send to Canvas] button.  Click this button.
  • You will receive a prompt confirming the creation in Canvas with 2 choices.
    • Unique Course/Section - Creates a Course and Section in Canvas both using the full Course Code from XenDirect.
      • If you place the Term_SIS_ID from the Canvas Term in the XenDirect Session[Sequence] field. The Course will be placed within that Canvas Term. You must have the correct Session associated with the XenDirect Section.
      • The value placed in XenDirect Session[Sequence] field and the Canvas Term_SIS_ID must be an integer. Letters and Characters are not accepted.
    • Section under Course - This will keep creating Canvas Sections under the Canvas course similar to how XenDirect's Course/Sections are organized.
      • You cannot associate a Term ID using this method.
    • The Canvas Course ID is returned to XenDirect and automatically stored in the [Alt Course Code] field of the Course. The Canvas Section is also created and the Canvas Section ID is returned and stored in the XenDirect Section [Alt Section Code] field.  Do not alter these two values.
  • The XenDirect Instructor will be Enrolled in the Canvas Section as a “TeacherEnrollment”.
    • The Instructor must already be a user in Canvas with the proper permissions. The email for the Canvas user account must match the XenDirect Staff record email address.
  • Repeat this for every Canvas course and section.
  • Once a XenDirect Course Section is sent to Canvas, you can update the start and/or end dates anytime by clicking the [Update to Canvas] button in the XenDirect Course Section Toolbar.

Now that the courses and sections are created in XenDirect, the last step is to publish the course in Canvas.  A Canvas instructor or administrator must login into Canvas and publish the course in Canvas when ready.
