SMS Text Feature Setup

Xenegrade assists organizations in setting up the SMS Text feature in XenDirect. This process involves creating a Twilio account, configuring credentials, and integrating the service into XenDirect for sending text messages.

Note: Organizations must have a Twilio Account with sufficient funds to cover messaging costs. Xenegrade will provide guidance throughout the setup process.


Steps to Set Up SMS Text Messaging

Step 1: Determine Twilio Account Status

  • Do you already have a Twilio SMS account?
    • If yes, Xenegrade can use your existing credentials to connect XenDirect to Twilio.
    • If no, proceed to Step 2 to create a Twilio account.

Step 2: Create a Twilio Account

  1. Sign up for a Twilio account and add funds to cover messaging costs.
  2. Consider the following before setup:
    • Message Frequency: Estimate how often you will send SMS messages to determine the necessary funding level.
    • U.S. vs. International Messaging: Decide whether you will send messages only to U.S. numbers or include international numbers.
    • Reply Handling: XenDirect does not support SMS replies except for STOP commands. However, Twilio charges per message for all replies.
    • Phone Number Type: Choose between:
      • Standard 10-digit number (default, lower cost)
      • SMS Short Code (higher cost, typically used for bulk messaging)
    • Campaign Registration:
      • Required by law to identify your organization as a sender.
      • Helps distinguish legitimate campaigns from spam senders.
      • Xenegrade will assist in setting up your campaign.

Step 3: Connect Twilio to XenDirect

  1. Once your Twilio account is set up, Xenegrade will obtain the necessary credentials.
  2. These credentials will be entered into XenDirect to activate SMS texting services.

Step 4: Assign User Permissions

  • Review which users have access to the SMS Text feature.
  • Limit access to only essential personnel for security and compliance.
