How Postal Codes Work When Entering Addresses
When entering an address into any form, the Postal Code process operates as follows:
US Postal Codes
- Make sure the Postal Country is set to "United States".
- You can enter the Postal City, State, and Postal Code, OR only enter the Postal Code field. The Postal City and Postal State fields are not required. However, if only Postal Code is entered and the postal code has numerous alias cities, one will be selected at random.
- Use the Postal Code Lookup button if desired. To filter the Postal Code Lookup list, enter the first few characters of the postal code OR postal city in the Postal Code field. Then click the Postal Code Lookup button. The list will be filtered by the characters entered in the Postal Code field. Click on the value desired. When the Postal Code Lookup list closes, the Postal City, State, Code, and Country fields will populate based on the value chosen.
- If the Postal Code value does not exist in the Postal Code table, you still only need to enter the Postal Code without a City or State. Upon saving, the Postal Code will be searched in the official USPS postal list and saved to the Postal Code table automatically. It is now saved for future use.
- During the save, if the combination of city, state, and postal code are not in the XenDirect postal code table and not in the master USPS postal code list, the user will receive a prompt “The (value) is not a valid US postal code”.
Non-US Postal Codes
- Make sure the Postal Country is set to the correct Country. Use the Country Lookup button if needed.
- Enter the Postal Code, Postal City, and Postal State fields as appropriate. If there is no Postal Code, leave the field blank. Postal City and Postal State fields are optional but at least one of the two must contain a value.
- If the postal combination of city, state, code, and country do not exist in the Postal Code table, upon saving, it will be saved to the Postal Code table automatically. It is now saved for future use.
